Inventory of Recreational Facilities —
DESCRIPTION OF RECREATIONAL FACILITIES COUNTY BY COUNTY
San Joaquin County
San Joaquin County's Primary Zone lands are located in the southern and western sections of the Legal Delta covering about 190,000 acres, approximately 39 percent of the Primary Zone. The lands include the areas generally bound by I-5 to the east, Old River to the south, Old River and the Mokelumne River to the west and the Mokelumne River to the north. Waterways in the Primary Zone include: Bear Creek, the Calaveras River, the Stockton Deep Water Channel, the Middle River, the North and South Forks of the Mokelumne River, Old River, and the San Joaquin River. Islands and tracts in the Primary Zone include: New Hope Tract, Canal Ranch, Brack Tract, Terminous Tract, Staten Island, Bouldin Island, Venice Island, Empire Tract, King Island, Mandeville Island, Medford Island, Rindge Tract, McDonald, Bacon Island, Lower and Upper Jones Tract, Lower, Middle, and Upper Roberts Islands, Union Island, Fabian Tract, Woodward Tract, and Victoria Island. Much of the City of Stockton is located in the Secondary Zone, with some City lands on Roberts Island in the Primary Zone.
Numerous marinas are located within the County boundaries; all of these marinas are privately owned and operated. Small marinas contain 50 or fewer berths. There are six small marinas which range from ten to 43 berths. Four of these marinas are located in the Primary Zone of the Delta; two are located within the Secondary Zone. These marinas are scattered throughout the Delta: one on the Middle River, two on the San Joaquin River, two on the South Fork of the Mokelumne River, and one on the Deep Water Channel.
Medium marinas contain between 50 to 200 berths. Eight medium marinas are located in the Primary and Secondary Zones of the Delta. Several are on the banks of the San Joaquin River and the Deep Water Channel; others are on Little Potato Slough, Disappointment Slough, Fabian and Bell Canals, Turner Cut, and Whiskey Slough. Houseboat rentals are available at Herman and Helen's and Holiday Harbor Marina.
Large marinas contain more than 200 berths. Five large marinas are located in the Primary and the Secondary Zones. These large marinas range from 201 to 700 berths. Three of these marinas are located in the Primary Zone of the Delta bordering Honker Cut and Disappointment Slough, Potato Slough, and Turner Cut. The largest marina, Village West, with 700 berths, is located on Fourteen Mile Slough in the City of Stockton. Three of the large marinas provide houseboat rentals: King Island Resort, Paradise Point Marina, and Tower Park Marina. All of the large marinas include picnic facilities and a boat launch ramp.
There are numerous launching facilities within San Joaquin County. Most of the marinas have launch ramps. Public boat launch facilities include: Morelli Park in Stockton on the Deep Water Channel; Buckley Cove Park in Stockton on the Deep Water Channel; Dos Reis Park in the Lathrop Area on the San Joaquin River; Louis Park in Stockton on the Smith Canal; and Mossdale Crossing in Lathrop on the San Joaquin River. Many of these publicly owned sites include other recreational facilities for picnicking, fishing, camping, and hiking.
Tent and RV camping sites are located throughout the Delta area of San Joaquin County. Most of the camping areas are privately owned and located in marinas; however, there are several publicly owned sites, including Dos Reis Park in the Lathrop Area on the San Joaquin River with 26 camping sites, launch ramps, picnicking sites and fishing access; and Westgate Landing on Terminous Island by the Mokelumne River which has 14 camping sites, 30 berths, picnicking areas, and a fishing pier. The largest camping area is in Tower Park on Terminous Island on Little Potato Slough with 400 camping sites, 390 berths, a launch ramp, and picnicking sites.
There are quite a number of picnic areas located within the San Joaquin County portion of the Delta in privately owned marinas and in publicly owned parks. Public picnicking areas are located at American Legion Park in Stockton, Buckley Cove Park in Stockton on the Deep Water Channel, Dos Reis Park in the Lathrop Area on the San Joaquin River, Mossdale Crossing in Lathrop on the San Joaquin River, and at Westgate Landing on Terminous Island on the Mokelumne River. Marinas which offer picnic facilities to berthers include: King Island Resort, Mossdale Marina, New Hope Landing, Paradise Point Marina, Stephens Anchorage, Tiki Lagun, Tower Park, and Windmill Cove.
Formal fishing access is located at six locations in San Joaquin County. Most formal fishing access is located in publicly owned parks or wildlife areas in the Secondary Zone of the Delta. White Slough Wildlife Area on Terminous and Shin Kee Tracts is a 272 acre wildlife area managed by the Department of Fish and Game which allows fishing access, hunting, and hiking. Other formal fishing access areas are in American Legion Park, Buckley Cove Park, Dos Reis Park, Fritz Grupe Park, and Westgate Landing.
There are four trails in San Joaquin County near the Delta waterways these include: the Bike and Jog Path in Stockton on the Calaveras River, Louis Park in Stockton on the Smith Canal, Van Buskirk Park in Stockton on Walker Slough, and White Slough Wildlife Area on Terminous and Shin Kee Tracts. All of these trails are publicly owned and managed.
Eleven private Yacht Clubs were inventoried in San Joaquin County. Many are located on the banks of the Stockton Deep Water Channel.
Nine Public Parks are located on the waterfront of San Joaquin County. The City of Stockton sites include: American Legion Park, Buckley Cove Park, Fritz Grupe Park, Louis Park, McLeod Park, and Van Buskirk Park. Other County-owned public parks include: Dos Reis Park, Mossdale Crossing Park, and Westgate Landing. Westgate Landing is located in the Primary Zone. These parks provide fishing access, camping facilities, picnicking facilities, trails, and launch ramps.
Two special wildlife facilities are founded in San Joaquin County. One of these facilities is White Slough Wildlife Area on Terminous and Shin Kee Tracts. This area owned by the State Department of Fish and Game, allows fishing access, and hunting. The other facility is the Woodbridge Preserve on Brack Tract by Hog Slough, owned and managed by the State Department of Fish and Game as seasonal Sandhill Crane habitat. The Department allows wildlife viewing with docent supervision.
