Delta Protection Commission

The mission of the Delta Protection Commission is to adaptively protect, maintain, and where possible, enhance and restore the overall quality of the Delta environment consistent with the Delta Protection Act, and the Land Use and Resource Management Plan for the Primary Zone. This includes, but is not limited to, agriculture, wildlife habitat, and recreational activities. The goal of the Commission is to ensure orderly, balanced conservation and development of Delta land resources and improved flood protection.

• CONGRESSMAN GARAMENDI INTRODUCES DELTA NATIONAL HERITAGE AREA ESTABLISHMENT ACT. On March 7, 2013, Congressman John Garamendi with original cosponsors Representatives George Miller, Doris Matsui, Jerry McNerney, and Mike Thompson, along with Northern California County Supervisors, announced the introduction of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta National Heritage Area Establishment Act. The bill, H.R. 1004, is the identical House companion to S.228, legislation recently introduced by Senator Feinstein.  See the press release and bill language. 
• US SENATORS FEINSTEIN AND BOXER PROPOSE DELTA NATIONAL HERITAGE AREA.  On February 4, 2013, U.S. Senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer introduced the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta Heritage Area Act, a bill that creates California’s first National Heritage Area.  The bill will establish the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta as a National Heritage Area, to be managed by the Delta Protection Commission. The goal of the National Heritage Area is to conserve and protect the Delta, its communities, its resources and its history. The Great California Delta Trail

Recognizing the unique natural resources of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, the growing demands for public access to these resources, and the increasing recognition of the importance of outdoor recreation, the Governor signed, Senate Bill 1556 (Senator Torlakson) supporting the creation of a Delta trail network. The DPC has been mandated to facilitate and complete the feasibility and planning process for the Trail.

Abandoned Vessel Removal

The DPC has facilitated discussions among the five Delta Counties and other partners to address the growing environmental and enforcement problems of abandoned vessels in the Delta.     

Coastal Cleanup

Eighty Percent of the trash entering our Delta waterways comes from sources on land. Each year, the Commission actively participates in the California Coastal/River/Creek Clean-up Day by hosting a site in the five Delta Counties. Please help our Delta and sign up to volunteer. 

Land Use and Resource Management Plan

The Commission's Land Use and Resource Management Plan (Management Plan) was last updated on February 25, 2010.  The Management Plan outlines the long-term land use requirements for the Primary Zone of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.  

Lower Yolo Bypass Planning Forum

The Lower Yolo Bypass is the southern most portion of Yolo Bypass (Bypass )including Prospect and Liberty Island, Little Holland Tract, Ryer Island, Egbert Tract and other adjacent properties. The Bypass is a leveed, 59,000-acre floodplain on the west side of the lower Sacramento River in California’s Yolo and Solano Counties.

Economic Sustainability Plan

The Economic Sustainability Plan (ESP) shall include information and recommendations that inform the Delta Stewardship Council's policies regarding the socioeconomic sustainability of the Delta region.

National Heritage Area Feasibility Study

A place designated by the United States Congress where natural, cultural, historic and recreational resources combine to form a cohesive, nationally-distinctive landscape arising from patterns of human activity shaped by geography.

Delta Working Landscapes

The project promotes ways to assist farmers in integrating agricultural activities with ecosystem restoration. The DPC has a collaborative partnership with Ducks Unlimited, Hart Restoration Inc., and local landowners.

Delta Emergency Response & Preparedness

In collaboration with the Governor's Office of Emergency Services and the Delta Counties Emergency Response Team, the DPC is facilitating Delta-wide coordination and planning for effective emergency preparedness and response across jurisdictional boundaries.
